In order to promote future research topics and initiate these studies, prospective studies, and research projects, Eusko Ikaskuntza – Basque Studies Society, in collaboration with eight universities of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU, Deusto, MU, UPNA, UNAV, UNED, UPPA and UBM), has launched the second call for proposals for the research promotion and support program. The objective of the call is to promote the initial analysis of future research topics, boost research work during the initial months, and facilitate the development of state-of-the-art approaches to future lines of research.
2ª convocatoria. Programa de fomento y apoyo a la investigación de Eusko Ikaskuntza - Sociedad de Estudios Vascos
1. PURPOSE OF THE CALL
In order to promote future lines of research, Eusko Ikaskuntza offers three grant/scholarship programs (hereinafter, GRANT) for the 2024-2025 academic year, aimed at developing new studies and research topics.
2. TARGET AUDIENCES
The Eusko Ikaskuntza Research Promotion and Support Program is specifically aimed at students pursuing a master's degree, but is also open to doctoral students and students in their fourth-year bachelor's degree program and fifth-year double degree program (hereinafter, all individuals or groups supported by the program will be referred to as BENEFICIARIES).
The research or study may be presented by a single individual or by a group of students, provided that the grant is awarded to the entire group.
3. duration
The program duration will be 6 months, from January to June (extendable up to 12 months at the request of the program beneficiary).
4. research topics
Eusko Ikaskuntza will prioritize research or studies in the following areas and lines of work:

Identity and diversity in the Basque Country.

Youth culture and intergenerational transmission.

Intergenerational solidarity in the Basque Country.

Territory, migration, and roots.
-
Language, education, and coexistence.
-
New spiritualities, beliefs, and values.
- Participation, democracy, and social commitment.
- Artificial intelligence, humanism, and the future of the social sciences.
- Analysis of linguistic practices and ideologies in the Basque Country.
- Socio-economic development.
- People's health and well-being.
- Advantages of our own law in the face of current challenges.
- Reinterpretation of the landscape in the gastronomy sector.
- Free theme.
5. LANGUAGE
Studies and research projects may be completed in Basque, Spanish, or French.
6. AMOUNT OF THE GRANT
Eusko Ikaskuntza will offer three grants of 2,000 euros net each, either individually or to the group as a whole, in the 2025-2026 academic year.
Eusko Ikaskuntza will pay 1,000 euros net to each beneficiary, considering groups as a single beneficiary unit, in December 2025, and the remaining 1,000 euros after submission and evaluation of the project (in June 2026 or on the date established for submission in the program).
If the completed work is not submitted within the deadline indicated in the award or is deemed not to meet the required quality level, the second payment will be suspended, and the beneficiary individual or group must return the first payment.
Eusko Ikaskuntza will directly pay the student or group members, as applicable, the amount stipulated in the award by any means it deems appropriate.
With regard to the tax obligations of the Basque Autonomous Community and the Foral Community of Navarre, the grants received will be exempt from Personal Income Tax, with no obligation to withhold them. Likewise, with regard to Social Security, there is no obligation to contribute.
7. APPLICATIONS SUBMISSION
Individuals wishing to receive a grant from Eusko Ikaskuntza must submit the following documentation to process the application:
- A completed Application form.
- The candidate's CV, which must be attached to the application form.
- A copy of the candidate's ID, which must be attached to the application form.
Submitting applications implies express and formal acceptance of the conditions specified in these rules.
8. obligaTIONS
The grant from Eusko Ikaskuntza is compatible with grants received from other institutions. However, the candidate(s) must specify the amount of the grant and from which entity they received it, or if a response is pending.
Likewise, projects that benefit from support from Eusko Ikaskuntza can be submitted to other competitions.
9. deadlines
The application period will be from September 8, 2025, to November 23, 2025.
10. JUDGE AND SELECTION CRITERIA
Applications will be assessed by a jury composed of representatives from the following entities:
- Eusko Ikaskuntza
- University of the Basque Country
- University of Deusto
- University of Navarra
- Public University of Navarra
- Mondragon University
- UNED, National University of Distance Education
- Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour
- Université Bordeaux Montaigne
The jury will consider the following criteria:
- Interest and relevance of the chosen research topic.
- Proposed research or study methodology.
- Opportunities and scope of the selected topic and methodology as key lines of research for the future.
- Basque will be prioritized as the language for research development.
- The selection of candidates will take into account territorial, gender, and linguistic balance.
11. JURY'S DECISION
Eusko Ikaskuntza will announce the jury's decision in December 2025. The announcement will specify the full names of the grant recipients, the title of the selected research projects or studies, and the deadlines for their implementation.
If the proposals received do not meet the required level of interest or quality, the jury may declare one or more of the programs void.
12. other program contributions
Recipients of the grant, in addition to their university tutor, may, if they wish, receive support from an expert from Eusko Ikaskuntza.
Furthermore, the research or studies of recipients of the grant may be included in Eusko Ikaskuntza outreach events: conferences, seminars, lecture series, congresses, the RIEV magazine, or other media agreed upon with Eusko Ikaskuntza and approved by both parties.
