Summary

This essay focuses on the analysis of the process of regulation, delegitimisation under oppression of Charivaric and festive traditions in Basque popular culture throughout the long period between commerce with salt and the triumph of liberal and bourgeois society. This process was dramatic and it experienced many a response from peasants and artisans, who appealed to the community custom values that government the various levels of life in common.
