Summary

The purpose of this work is to follow the evolutionary steps taken by a people whose original constitutive elements have got lost with the passing of time. The historical attraction of this people is not due to its economic or war-waging capacity, which was very scarce in the Roman era, but in its capacity to retain and to bring over to the present day some of the roots of their identity. In the Pre-Roman and Roman eras, these roots were overwhelmed by foreign elements that mixed into the population and by the weight of the conqueror´s political and administrative arrangements. With the downfall of the Roman Empire, the Basque people reactivated their culture and enjoyed an independence that they were to defend militarily against the Goths.
