Summary

This paper deals with the interpretation of the dedicatory preface written ; by Etcheberri from Ziburu for C. de Rueil, Bishop of Bayonne, in Manual debotionezcoa (1627). The proposed interpretation leads to a new vision of the sociolinguistic environment in which the labourdin literature developed during the ; Counter-Reformation in the bishopric of Bayonne. Following this interpretation the ; use of Basque instead of French in religious books such as catechisms gave rise ; to a linguistic conflict among religious scholars in Labourd.
