Financial aid to cinema awarded by the Basque Government once the dictatorship was over generated an upward swing in the seventh art in the Basque Country between 1980 and 1984. In the second half of the nineteen-eighties, for various reasons, this cinematographic activity entered a period of crisis. There is now, however, a considerable filmography that has become quite a reference within modern Basque culture.
