Summary

The 16th century witnessed the zenith of the work of pious women in the Alava town of Salvatierra-Agurain. Notary protocols allow us to know of the conditions to accede to this employment and its legal status. This study also allows us to know about the strengths of these women who occasionally paid their service to others with their lives, and their weaknesses, as they did not always honour their commitment to sexual abstinence.
