Summary
In 1931, at the time of the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic, applications were sent from various social sectors in Vasconia to Eusko Ikaskuntza-Basque Studies Society demanding a draft autonomic Statute that could be accepted by all the political sensibilities present in the four territories. Eusko Ikaskuntza took up this petition and gathered reputable personalities from the cultural and political life who, after much work, drafted the General Statute of the Basque State, a text that was to become the paradigm of negotiation and understanding, and a source of reference for all later statures. To mark the 75th anniversary of the so-called "Statute of Basque Studies", Eusko Ikaskuntza edits a facsimile of the original text. Reading it, it is possible to understand some of the keys of our present.
