Summary

The ecology of halophytic plant communities at the Mundaka-Urdaibai estuary was studied. The analysis of both ecological profils of species with respect to environmental factors and the species-factor mutual information, allowed us to detect main indicator species and their ecological amplitude. On the other hand, by means of multifactorial analysis, seven ecological groups were desribed along the main topographic grandient in the salt marsh. Between mena high water neap tides and highest astronomical tides, the groups are dominated by the following species: Zostera noltii, Spartina maritima, Salicornia ramosissima, Halimione portulacoides, Juncus martitimus, Scirpus maritimus and Elymus pycnanthus, respectively. The topographic gradien is associated to a progressive change in the edaphic conditions, i.e. a clear increase in organic matter content, while salinity values reveal a more unpredictalbe pattern of change. To la large extente, plant pattern and composition of communities is, mainly at the high marsh, linked to alternating processes of agriculture settlement, abandon and recolonization of halophytes. Undoubtedly, in order to establish a management planning for such an interesting ecosystem, it is essential to know the ecological requirements of halophitic plants and communities, their structure and spatio-temporal dinamics
