Summary

In the cultural imagery elaborated in the 19th century to illustrate Basque identity, two series of aesthetic representations and motives can be appreciated: the first offers a solar and heroic vision, while the other reflects the dismal climate of the last quarter of the century. The first is developed from mid-century onwards, when the European scientific world and writers show a great interest on the issue of the origin of the Basques and of their language. Afterwards, visiting writers, and especially Basque-speaking writers are concerned about the survival of the Basque language and of the own identity, and in few years the perspective of the solar myth becomes a crepuscular perspective.
