Summary

An analysis is made of the concept of fundamentalism and its application to religious movements that claim for the return to cultural origins in response to cur- rent challenges, within the context of the centuries-long cultural incomprehension of the Arab-Islamic East by the West. The simplification of the reality of the other side leads to a perception of the other side as a threat. Although part of the success of Islamist doctrines is due to the frustration provoked by the failure of politics after the decolonisation, It is necessary to distinguish between fundamentalist or Islamist discourses.
