Summary

In Spain, the European movement that was contrary to the French Revolution was denominated Carlism, and its main characteristic was to confront the extension of revolutionary ideas and liberalism, which was considered the successor thereof. What happened in the Basque Country?

In the Basque Country, Carlism had a special importance for concrete reasons, which were different from those existing in other countries: these reasons were precisely the Fueros, or special statutes. As is well known, the Fueros were laws and norms for the organisation of the political, economic and administrative lives of each of the Basque territories. Besides, the Fueros were the basis of the organs of government that were created in or around the 15th century.
