Summary

The 16th century is a difficult era for the Basque provinces to the north of the Pyrinees: invasions and religion wars that mean destruction and fires. The humanist, literary and artistic current of the Italian Renaissance does not reach local society. Most of the noble families, of modest wealth, will conform with arrainging, at the most, the enlargement of their old homestead. The only one building in which a wide-reaching Renaissance program was carried out is now, unfortunately, in ruins: it is Bidache castle.
