Summary

The objective of this article is to examine the participation of Altos Hornos de Vizcaya in the building of workers´ housing at the beginning of the 20th century. The article is divided into four parts, beginning with a review of the living conditions of workers in Barakaldo and Sestao, and then to examine the employer´s response and that of the State to the problem of insuficient cheap housing. Subsequently, an analysis is made of the constitution of a Society of Cheap Houses by that company and the subsequent implication of other companies of the region in similar initiatives.
