Summary

Guilds forbade women to accede to a trade. Maried women worked in subordinate tasks under their husband´s supervision. When the husbands were ill or handicapped, women could then take over the workshop. The artisan´s widow was allowed to maintain the workshop, in some cases during a year and in others for unlimited periods of time. Single women and widows without resources had to work to survive as maids, teachers, seamstresses, seling food, as cashiers, cobblers or midwives.
