Summary

We may be having a wrong vision of the occupational activity of women. In the Basque case there are abundant testimonies of how many of those who visited us felt impressed by women´s incessant activity, in the very diverse branches of production and services. It is clear that women were exercising, in practice, a much more important role than was oficially recognised. In this study we analyse washing places as public spaces, used by women, where hard work was caried out and where women maintained their social relationships.
