Summary

Antoine d´Abbadie returned from Ethiopia in 1848. These were the times of the Second Republic, times of upheaval in Iparralde. As a consequence of a forestry law, pastures were forbidden in gall oak groves. The Republic had pledged freedom and the Basques had understood this as the freedom of pasture in forests and the exemption of the military service. The laws, however, do not change overnight. Farmers rebelled in Armendaritz, Amikuze, Atarratze, Altzürükü, Muskildi, Oztibarre and Garazi: this is the context in which we see Lohilakat.
