Summary
Portugalete is one of the five towns that were founded by the Lords of Bizkaia between 1299 and 1327 with the objective of structuring the settlements of population in the coastal zone of the Seignory. In 1322, María Díaz de Haro awarded a town privilege to a small settlement that existed along the Nervion River estuary, and this brought about the beginning of a long history facing the sea and in harsh competition with the neighbouring town of Bilbao.
