Summary

Until the contests of d´Abbadie provide them with a reputation that can propel them onto the scene, the poetic improvisations by Basque bertsolaris do not enjoy a great prestige. It can be said that it is part of the landscape, they go unnoticed. What takes place within the tension generated by the passing of the century, more or less from 1850 to 1935, is the beginning of a new type of attention for this social conduct. Little by little, poetic improvisation is discovered, described, displaced, and set within a show. Turns in the use of the floor are defined and evaluation criteria elaborated, a literary "organum" is established, and a show structure is put in place. To research, today on such an institutional birth of "bertsolarismo" is to analyse in retrospect how these representation devices were structured to transform poetic improvisation into a "literary genre". This is what is called archaeology of "bertsolarismo".
