The author starts by exposing the first contacts of Humboldt with the Basque Country, and how his investigations about the Basque language were started. A review of his main linguistic contribution in relation with the Basque language is done, that is a preface of the widest part of the work, which deals with the influence of Humboldt in the later philological studies. The author finishes by congratulating himself because the Basque language has survived the modernising era, in opposition to what was foreseen by Humboldt
