This article examines the relations between ports in the Portuguese north-east and the ports of the Spanish coast of the Bay of Biscay in the 15th and 16th centuries: this was a maritime commerce that was inscribed in an economic space that was more integrated than one would normally surmise, both within the logistics of the Peninsular states and in the modern world system.
