In 1948, Eusko Ikaskuntza organised the 7th International Congress of Basque Studies in Biarritz, where it called for an International Day of the Basque Language, with the aim of disseminating and making known the universality of the Basque language throughout the world. Following this proclamation, it was agreed to celebrate the day of the universality of the Basque language every 3rd December, coinciding with the day of Saint Francis Xavier. Thus, on 3rd December 1949, the International Day of the Basque Language was celebrated for the first time.
This year marks 75 years since Eusko Ikaskuntza first proclaimed and celebrated this day, and so the anniversary will be commemorated by renewing and updating the declaration made 75 years ago. A round table has also been organised to discuss the work on the integration and consolidation of the Basque-speaking community.
