Jakiunde, Basque Academy of Science, Arts and Humanities

On 25th October Jakiunde, Academia de las Ciencias, de las Artes y de las Letras de Eusko Ikaskuntza (Basque Academy of Science, Arts and Humanities) was set up in Donostia-San Sebastián. Jakiunde is the top-level Advisory Body and had been created with the aim of becoming a forum of reference for Basque society.

Under the presidency of the physicist Pedro Miguel Etxenike, Jakiunde is composed of public figures well known for their work in different fields of applied and pure sciences, artistic creation and critical thinking, who will work as a team in order to offer society their qualified perception of great and new challenges of the future. These include holders of the Euskadi Research Prize, Príncipe de Viana Prize and Eusko Ikaskuntza Prize, that is to say, prestigious specialists in fields such as Literature, Law, History, Anthropology, Science, Cinema, Music or Architecture.

The objective is for the members to work as a whole to reflect and give their opinions on what is lacking in society and on the course Basque humanities, science and arts should take over the coming years. Jakiunde takes its inspiration from the most advanced models of Academies in Europe, whereby it assumes functions including research, the preparation of studies, reports and expert opinions of particular significance and importance, collaboration in cultural projects and participation in debates in the heart of the scientific community and in academic forums at state and international levels.

According to the Jakiunde?s regulations, its numerary members will meet three times a year in plenary sessions with the objective of approving the work carried out throughout the rest of the year by the specialised commissions. It will be the academics who make up these commissions, with the support of experts in their specific areas when they consider it necessary.

At this time, the Academy of Science, Arts and Humanities is formed by 26 members who represent all of Eusko Ikaskuntza?s territories of action; although the regulations consider that this number will rise to 31.
