One million documents in one year

Throughout 2006, Euskomedia Fundazioa has processed a considerable volume of documents commissioned by Basque institutions and private entities

Throughout 2006, Eusko Ikaskuntza?s Euskomedia Fundazioa has deployed an ample catalogue of documents commissioned by Basque institutions and companies, and has also implemented new initiatives directed to amplifying the offer of cultural documentation services.

One of the most important achievements of the year was the General Archives of Gipuzkoa. The documentation corresponding to the Provincial Government and Parliament Minutes from the 16th to the 19th centuries (Actas de Juntas y Diputaciones [siglos XVI-XIX]) and the Indexes of Protocols of the Notary Public District of Tolosa (16th to the 19th centuries) are now being computerised and catalogued with meta-data and database processing. This represents 157,000 pages in all.

Amongst the private archives in which Euskomedia Fundazioa has intervened during 2006 are the files belonging to José M? de Arizmendiarrieta, the founder of the cooperative movement in Mondragon, the main publications of which have been computerised and processed with OCR technologies. Also, the José Miguel de Barandiaran Foundation commissioned the inventory of 125 boxes from the famous anthropologist?s document archive.

At the service of Institutions

On petition from the Statutory Diputation of Gipuzkoa, Euskomedia Fundazioa has computerised the digging reports (OCR work of 43,200 pages) and restauration reports (OCR work of 6,354 pages); the electronic edition of the "Munibe" journal edited by the Aranzadi Science Society (15,250 pages), of the 34 volumes of Eusko Ikaskuntza?s "History-Geography Section Notebooks" and nine volumes of the Pre-history and Archaeology Section (a total of 18,209 pages). The collection of the "Argia" journal between 1919 and 1996 has also been digitalised.

The provincial institution also requested, for the Eresbil Archives in Errenteria, the computerisation of 600 pages of scores by Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga and Juan Eresalde, apart from 5,283 pages of manuscripts by Gipuzkoan composers. The Basque Cinema Library has designed a web platform for the system of information and set-up of a database on cinematographic activity in the Basque Country as a whole.

In total, the sum of text or graphic documents processed throughout 2006 is around one million units.

To conclude, last year witnessed the launching of Euskomedia Móvil, a technological platform for the management and dissemination of contents from and to mobile devices, and 2007 will witness the culmination of a project that has been on the works for two years: 3DIGITALA, which is to become an important picture and sound data bank.

Wikipedia

According to the publication "Internet & Euskadi" last month, a company has calculated which are the 500 websites with the most links from Wikipedia, the multi-lingual free encyclopaedia that is being written by volunteers since 2001 and which is one of the websites in the Internet with the most hits in the world. Google, Yahoo, Geocities, YouTube, etc, occupy the first positions, as was to be expected. Eusko Ikaskuntza?s Euskomedia Fundazioa is in position 74, with 686 links.
