Summary

Arnauld d´Abbadie d´Arrast (1815-1893) visited Ethiopia with his brother Antoine between 1837 and 1853. Antoine was the "learned man" of the journey. Arnauld befriends many of the local chiefs of Ethiopia. In 1868 he published Douze ans de séjour dans la Haute-Ethiopie (Abyssinie) [Twelve years of stay in Upper Ethiopia (Abissinia)]. Two other volumes have been published by the Vatican Apostolic Library in 1980 and 1983. A fourth one is ready to be published. In these books, he describes every day life and military life, horses, and weapons. He provides precise portraits of many Ethiopians and explains their battle strategy. On his return, he settled in Ciboure where he had a castle built.
