Summary
This work constitutes a review of the scientific literature that deals with the ontogenesis of prelinguistic behaviours. To this effect it s the findings that corroborate the role of declarative gesture as precursor to basic cognitive skills underlying communication and language, providing pointers to identifying as early as possible signs of delay in communicative development and to understanding disorders such as autism.
