Summary

Cinema and television have used several genres to popularise science. Among them, documentary is specially important. The history of both media shows several examples of programmes which have succeeded in this difficult task of popularising science. This article explores the history and the concept of documentary as well as some of its nuclear characteristics, in order to explain the capacity of the genre to communicate scientific contents and present some its limitations.
