Summary

On comparing the situation of Catalonia with that of the Basque Country one must take several points into account: the considerable difference between the official languages in the Basque Country, the relative desire to learn the latter, the lack of preparation of teachers and the need to consider that in the Basque Country, bilingualism is, in part, a political decision. It is proposed that schooling begins in the mother tongue and that there is a moderate immersion into the second language during the primary education. Thereinafter a B model could be applied but always depending on the circumstances in each case
