Summary

This work explores the concept of borderline spaces with a view to recent changes in European societies, especially with respect to the latest enlargement of the EU; it also examines the changing character of frontiers and proposes the notion of a post-occidental Europe. It states that Europe is not only adopting a post-national form, but also a post-occidental character, and that this latest dimension may be more significant. One important aspect in this situation is the different relationships between the centre and the peripheries, the latter being understood as areas of border reconfiguration.
