Summary

There is a great controversy on the surname and place of origin of San Martín de la Ascension. Beasain and Bergara disputed the origin of the Saint until the Sacred Congregation decided, in 1867, that San Martín was named Loinaz and came from Beasain. However, Ibarranguelua was considered the place of origin of the Saint and several writings and articles that refer to this issue are analyzed. In conclusion, it seems that he was named Loinaz and that he did proceed from Beasain
