The surname of the navigator must be Elcano and not Cano. The Cano surname is not personal since his father carried it. It may be patronymic (deriving from the name or nickname of the father though in that case he would only be signed as Cano, not "del Cano") or from the manorial (in this case there is no manor or a known house called Cano).
