Basque identity(ies) in the 21st century: what do we mean when we talk about Basque identity?

Identifying, collecting and analyzing the ways of understanding, living or defining the Basque identity have been the starting point of this research project.

At the XIX Eusko Ikaskuntza Congress , which will be held from October 2 to 4, 2024, the results of the project "Basque identity(ies) in the 21st century: objective 2050" will be presented. Without waiting until then, through the usual media we will report on the main lines investigated and the first results obtained.

We have compiled the diagnosis of current Basque identity in five areas: the characteristics of Basque identity; the elements of Basque identity; the agents of Basque identity; the change of Basque identity; and, the future of Basque identity. The first results of the first area, that is, the characteristics of Basque identity, have been published in issue 783 of the digital magazine Euskonews.

We have turned to citizens to identify ways of understanding, living or defining Basque identity. One of the criteria of the research project is to collect the views, speeches and proposals of the citizens of all the territories of Euskal Herria; that is, take into account the reality and peculiarities of each territory.

The collection of information for the research has not been defined and completed in advance, but has been completed as progress has been made in data collection. In the process of preparing the sample, the geographical origin, gender, age and language of the informants has been taken into account. During the investigation we continually contrast the information collected, collecting new data and completing the information we have, extracting new hypotheses and filling in existing gaps.
