Summary

Traditionally in the Basque Country, mental health care was carried out in large isolated institutions. In 1979 Dr. Ajuriaguerra started psychiatric reform, creating new centres which guaranteed the care and access to a whole range of mental health services. At the present time this model continues to operate, including the promotion of new areas of specialization and research.
