Summary
A decade of terrestrial and underwater archaeological research has revealed much about Basque and Inuit activities in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Hare Harbor was first visited by late 16th century Basque whalers. In the late 17th century the site became a cod-fishing and charcoal- production facility operated jointly by Basques and Inuit. In addition to documenting post- 1600 Basque activities in the Gulf, Hare Harbor is the first site to demonstrate Inuit economic collaboration with Europeans.
