Summary

Professor Carlo Tagliavini summarises the work of his master, the great Italian linguist Alfredo Trombetti (1866-1929). Initially an autodidact, he studied an infinity of languages and obtained a doctorate in history of linguistics. He studied the Basque language in various works, and very especially in his Le origini della Linguabasca (1925). For him, the Basque was an intermediate language between the Caucasian and the Semitic languages. This was a theory that he was able to discuss with the German scholar Schuchardt in their abundant correspondence.
