Summary

During the Illustration, cartographic studies had great scientific and cultural interest, but at the same time were important for the political and economic development of countries. A considerable part of American cartography of the XVIII century is due to a group of sailors of Basque origin that sometimes directed and coordinated expeditions and in other occasions were integrating members of such expeditions. Various characters are mentioned, among which are Manuel de Aguirre and his "Research and Reflections on Geography with some indispensable previous events" (1872)
