Summary

The Basque Country was where Carlism reached its apogee. The basis of carlist ideology is the defense of religion, as it was considered that liberalism was trying to destroy Christian society. It was also considered that liberalism was only favouring the middle classes at the expense of the poor. Symbols of civilization such as the city and the railway were condemned. They considered themselves defenders of the "fueros" (special jurisdictions) and anticentralist. Carlism was possibly the antecedent to the first forms of nationalism in the Basque Country
