Summary

In the XVIth century, the Barco family became prominent in the merchant élites of Bilbao. This paper analyses its members. main action spheres during two generations. They adapted to the critical trend by adding cheap codfish to their intermediary dealing in fine north-european textiles, and diversified it thanks to relatives. relationships and by expanding to the Atlantic through Portuguese merchants. In politics, they passed from town council to the Biscayan government, at the same time as its institutions consolidated.
