Summary

This paper analyzes the government of the town of Bilbao in the late Ancien Regime and the institutional relationship between the town, Señorío of Biscay and the Monarchy. We observe the numerous and serious institutional conflicts between those political bodies at the last decades of the eighteenth century and the first years of the nineteenth century. Finally those struggles caused a deep internal crisis in the foral system.
