Summary

Urban transformations are always accompanied by polemic, since the sense and direction of the changes never fulfil the interests of all social sectors, especially so in big towns, characterized as they are by a considerable heterogeneity of publics and citizens. Taking the Raval quarter of Barcelona as the central element of analysis, the contrasts between urban policies (and specifically, of urban planning policies) in contrast with the aspirations and imaginaries of the crowded population that inhabits the town. As an element of contrast a brief analysis is made of the meaning of the great urban transformations associated with big trans-national events, such as Olympic Games, Expos or the Forum of cultures.
