Summary
On the basis of the origin of the humanities in the Renaissance, we describe its evolution, its contributions towards human self-consciousness and its relapses into anthropocentrism and anti-scientism. The basic underlying notions of nature, culture, genes, memes, science, philosophy and humanism are specified with a view to enabling an appropriate analysis to be made of the contemporary crisis in the humanities and to suggest paths for revival.
