Summary

Pilgrimages are festive rituals held in rural places, the performative potential of which is brought out by means of symbols. As with other types of festivities, they do not only have religious and recreational, but also civic or political roles, since they arouse feelings of belonging to a group, local and national identity. The latter is especially true in the Basque territory, due to their relationship with the nationalist ideology and movements.
