Created by a decree dated 16th September 1982 as a peripheral centre of the Culture and Tourism Department of the Basque Government, it has been located in Bergara (Gipuzkoa). It has several departments: there is a Microfilm Department, a Restoration Department and a Department for documental information on sources of Basque Country history not contained in Basque archives. The broad characteristics of the Basque Government´s policy in archives matters are designed in this centre
