Summary

The author begins by making a balance of the treatment received the Basque language throughout history from the authorities, intellectuals and the Basque people as a whole. The author verifies that a certain amount of mistakes have been committed. Awareness of the problem does not take place until the end of the 19th century and Sabino Arana-Goiri plays a fundamental role in this awareness. In the teaching of the future the Basque language will have to be the only school language until the age of 8-9 years old. After that it should receive aspecific treatment, in co-existence with the Spanish language. But there are two urgent problems to solve: the adequate training of teachers and the publication of good text books in Basque.
