Summary

In spite of the state of isolation maintained by Navarre in the last third of the 18 th century with respect to artistic tendencies originating in Madrid, it seems increasingly evident that the Royal Academy of San Fernando had an important regulatory role in the development of the arts in the Kingdom of Navarre. The polemic maintained by Santos Angel de Ochandátegui with various Navarran architects is meaningful in that it outlines the confrontation between two totally opposite conceptions of understanding art: Neo-classicism, with its structural clarity and its ornamental purity ; and Rococo, which had strongly been implanted in our land and became so difficult to uproot.
