Oiasso, Forua and other small Roman settlements on basque coast were abandoned ; in the early Middle Ages, and the coast was thus deserted. This article proposes ; a model of re-colonisation of the coast, between the late 9thcentury and the ; late 11thcentury, which, starting from the slopes of the immediate hinterland, ; culminates with the foundation of the "portus" or ports, the first of which was ; documented in 1082.
