Summary

Certain musical works are considered (41600-1650 approx.) which have a lot of chromatic passages. These appear, not as casual accidents, neither as expresive elements or imitations, but structurally, challenging the hierarchyc beginning of the tonality. It may be asked why this procedure wasn?t converted in system, the case being that in some contemporaneous theoretical sources, its acceptation is also perceived. Taking literary references and comparing them with the systematic acceptation of chromatism in XXth Century, it is finally established as origin, the notion of danger and fear of the vacuum that emerges from the undifferentiation of the sonorous material
