Summary

This work tries to disentangle the reason which could have lead the rural areas of the Basque territories to majoritarily join the Carlist cause, after having analyzed their relationship with the Crown and especially its deterioration which started around the mid-18th century, which could have been, amongst other causes, the culture medium for bringing about a different attitude with respect to the regional problem. It ends with a summarized view of the prolegomenas, vicissitudes and unfortunate end of the Bergara Treaty
