Summary

Basque dances used to be learnt within a family environment but this is no longer so. Because of this, and considering the fact that it is encouraged to include popular contents in school syllabuses and due to educational experiences that dances can provide to students, several arguments are divulged to include Basque dances in the educational process. This article also initially classifies various dances with their corresponding descriptions in two groups: open dances (usually performed during pilgrimages and for amusement) and closed dances (within a group each dancer performs his own function). The article also comprises a project on how and where dances should be included in the syllabus, as well as their purpose. This project also implies a series of appropriate circumstances to be carried out, like, for example, the need for adequate teachers, technical assistance, specific materials, etc.
