Summary

Jon Bilbao begins by describing the situation of the Basque language in the peninsular Basque provinces in 1936, a year that could have been crucial for a Basque cultural renaissance. The occupation of Euskadi by the Franquists in 1937 brought about the total disappearance of activity in favour of the Basque language. In 1948 the Franquist authorities continued forbidding any activities which, it seemed to them, were susceptible of considering the Basque language as somewhat more than a mere archaeological curiosity.
