Summary

The works of the Marquis de Folin (1817-96) deserve honourable mention in the history of Oceanography, as well as in the annals of the studies on Basque Country fauna. De Folin considered the land snails Crytazeca monodonta, Elena quimperiana, Trissexodon constrictus and Laminifera pauli were strange elements in the western Pyrenees, and that they might have been introduced there by the descendants of the people of Atlantis i.e.: the Basque people, in his working hypothesis. That is, in his opinion, faunistic data might support the idea of a sunken land bridge between Europe and North America. Therefore, such data may also induce to admitting the possibility of an Atlantean origin for the Basque people.>
